Veterans plan to protect the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington during an anti-war protest next month.
They fear demonstrators may deface the memorial, even though organizers say they have absolutely no intention of doing that.
Two veterans groups say they're concerned because some anti-war protesters spray-painted graffiti on the steps of the U.S. Capitol in January.
The black granite walls of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial bear the names of all those who were killed during the Vietnam conflict. The head of the veterans group known as rolling thunder says his members plan to protect the memorial and, quote, "support our troops."
The March 17th protest is to mark the fourth anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

Vietnam veterans held a press conference yesterday about their mission on March 17. On that day, anti-war activists from ANSWER plan to protest at the Vietnam War memorial in Washington. From their :
1. Gathering of Eagles is non-partisan. While each member has his or her own political beliefs, our common love and respect for America and her heroes is what brings us together.
2. We are a non-violent, non-confrontational group. We look to defend, not attack. Our focus is guarding our memorials and their grounds.
3. We believe that the war memorials are sacred ground; as such, we will not allow them to be desecrated, used as props for political statements, or treated with anything less than the solemn and heartfelt respect they–and the heroes they honor–deserve.
4. We are wholly and forever committed to our brothers and sisters in uniform. As veterans, we understand their incredible and noble sacrifices, made of their own accord for a nation they love more than life itself. As family members, we stand by them, and as Americans, we thank God for them.

Thanks Bill. Damn sure time the Vets speak out in numbers. The GoE is taking off like you wouldn't believe. Have had calls and untold emails from all eras of veterans wanting more information or volunteering to help. The designated hotels are mostly full.
