It's not all that complicated, folks.
John McCain wants to change DC, Barack Obama wants to change America.
One candidate believes in and cares about this country, one doesn't.
It's your vote. Make it count.

NYT: Gitmo suicides appear to have been politically motivated

Patterico overstates things when he says the article “confirms” it, but all available evidence does point in that direction.

The medical staff tried to more closely monitor detainees with mental-health problems. But that screening apparently did not factor in the possibility that the men might have been determined to kill themselves for other reasons — like loyalty to a cause

Bush assassination film wins festival prize for revealing “larger truth”

By unanimous vote of a five-member jury of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI), despite having received “largely negative reviews.”

FIPRESCI’s general secretary insists there was nothing political about their decision, and that in fact the film “irritated us a lot.” On what basis, then, did they award it a prize?

Haditha: Six to eight Marines to be charged?

As early as next week, say Time’s sources. The charges could include murder, the punishments could be capital.

They’ve got an exclusive interview with Staff Sgt. Frank Wuterich, who led the assault. His attorneys told him not to talk about the case so details are limited to descriptions of his boots and tattoos. The piece does give you a taste, though, of the personal and professional limbo the suspects have found themselves in since the news first broke.

A better use of your time is ...

Reading the Statute Would Have Been Too Much Trouble
John Hinderaker

From this morning's New York Times Corrections section:

Editors' Note

An article in the Week in Review last Sunday reported on the debate over how to try 14 terror suspects recently transferred to United States military custody. The Bush administration has proposed that the suspects be tried in military commissions under procedures the White House has presented to Congress, including rules that would allow the admission of evidence obtained under coercion or duress. Civil libertarians, on the other hand, say the suspects should get the stronger due-process protections of an ordinary court-martial. ...

The Times obviously viewed this correction as important, since it had the "Editors' Note" designation, rather than the usual "For the Record," and the dispute over the administration's proposal to try detainees is a topic now being given front-page coverage by the paper.

In that context, I was struck by the last paragraph of the correction:  ...

Associated Press and the Bilal Hussein case
Michelle Malkin

Over the past five months, I have pestered the Associated Press for answers about one of its photographers, Iraq-based Bilal Hussein. As noted here in April, Hussein's photos have raised persistent questions in the blogosphere about his relationship with terrorists in Iraq and whether his photos were/are staged in collusion with the enemy. Military sources informed me then that Hussein had been captured by American forces in a building in Ramadi, Iraq, with a cache of weapons.

AP has maintained complete silence about the case. Until this morning. In a bombshell article filed by Robert Tanner (hat tip: Jim Lynch), we learn some very interesting--and damning details--confirming my initial report: ...

Stove up dog

Dadblamed mouse's forgot how to count. I click the button once, it registers anywhere from one to three times. Bloggin' with a mouse like that is sorta like chasin' rabbits with one leg stove up. Know what happens when you double click the Start button? Nada. Zip. Like addin' John Murtha's integrity to Ted Kennedy's and John Kerry's. Like McCain's respect for the 1st Amendment. Like Michael Moore's patriotism.  An' me tryin to set up a new CafePress store an' all. Oops, forget I said that. Hard times or not, I broke down and gave Amazon fifteen bucks & shippin' for a new one while ago -- not bad for a 5-button optical mouse that says Gen-u-ine Microsoft Intellimouse on it. Hope they get it here quick. Feel like a carpenter with a dull saw. Grrrr.

The Religion of Peace Firebombs & Fatwas

New item via AINA: "According to the website Islam Memo, one Christian was killed in Baghdad after the Pope's speech two days ago. The speech created a wave of anger throughout the Islamic world, including Iraq. A poster has been placed in many Baghdad mosques for the previously unknown group, "Kataab Ashbal Al Islam Al Salafi," (Islamic Salafist Boy Scout Battalions). This group threatens to kill all Christians in Iraq if the Pope does not apologize in three days in front of the whole world to Mohammed."

Item: Sheikh Abubakar Hassan Malin's fatwa:

"Whoever offends our Prophet Muhammad should be killed on the spot by the nearest Muslim."

Item: Iraqi jihadi threat: ....

Good Idea
Greg Tinti

Security around the Pope has been tightened.

Italian media reported that security around Pope Benedict XVI has been beefed up following the harsh responses to his remarks on Islam.

On Sunday the pope is expected to deliver his weekly sermon from his summer home, and it is still not clear whether he will address the international uproar his comments have stirred. ...

Pope to address controversy on Sunday

So say CNN’s sources. He’ll discuss it during the weekly blessing, or “Angelus.” High noon in Rome, 6 a.m. here on the east coast. Audio will be available at some point on the Vatican website, but Benedict tends to deliver these things in his native language so I don’t know how useful it’ll be. Perhaps he’ll take the multilingual approach tomorrow given the interest in what he has to say. ...
