If we show tolerance we've had it
Contributed by Bill Faith

A Hawke's Bay Today Editorial:

The thwarted plan to kill hundreds, possibly thousands, of passengers on transatlantic flights reveals an enemy incapable of being placated or reasoned with.

The threat cannot subside with appeasement or through concessions and those who believe it can misunderstand what motivates Islamic extremism.

It has nothing to do with geopolitics or poverty. Hostility to western culture and envy of modern, industrialised society has produced the mullah-driven imperative of eradicating infidels and their influence. ...

As Israel has found, to survive the ambition of those who would wipe the state off the map, is to fight back. We who luxuriate in distance might be far less censorious of Israel if we faced exactly the same kind of threat from a proxy army that deliberately targeted our own civilians.

How can one hope to counter an enemy for whom it is a privilege to die (and who is so unconcerned when fellow Muslims are annihilated) when going about their solemn duty of blowing up non-believers?
