It's not all that complicated, folks.
John McCain wants to change DC, Barack Obama wants to change America.
One candidate believes in and cares about this country, one doesn't.
It's your vote. Make it count.

Bill's 2006.08.30 Short Shorts -- An experiment
(Updated throughout the day)

Gonna try something new here. Maybe y'all can give me some feedback in the comments. Historically I've written at least 90% of the posts on this blog, mostly short "Go read this" stuff, trying to keep our readers from not knowing about any important news in the world. I know some of you come by looking for those. I also know some of you get tired of having to scroll past a bunch of posts like that to find out what the "writers" in the pack have been up to. To try to satisfy both groups, I'm going to start doing daily "short shorts" posts, consisting of links and short excerpts from all over the web. I'll still do a few longer posts about major stories generating lots of buzz, but most of my daily blogging will go into one post, which I'll write in inverse chronological order sort of like a mini blog. Here's today's:

Over at Milblogs, John of Argghhh directs us to the newly named Paul Ray Smith Middle School.

Here (until the front page changes - sorry, no permalinks) is the original news story (and photos) from the 3ID's (The Division Smith served with in Iraq) web page.

Here's the school's homepage. (Mascot: Eagles, chosen by the student body. Should have been the Bulldogs, but that's okay...)

Here are the google news results for Paul Smith Middle School- the only four news sites to cover the story are military-based. Hard to break into the mainstream media during Jon Benet week, I guess

The Pierce County Sheriff's Department is searching for five people who allegedly attacked a uniformed National Guardsmen walking along 138th Street in Parkland Tuesday afternoon.

The soldier was walking to a convenience store when a sport utility vehicle pulled up alongside him and the driver asked if he was in the military and if he had been in any action.

The driver then got out of the vehicle, displayed a gun and shouted insults at the victim. Four other suspects exited the vehicle and knocked the soldier down, punching and kicking him.

What are we seeing when we watch events from the Middle East on our television screens? Is it news or is it terrorist theater? ...

I know how to fight. Like most American boys – and perhaps a few girls – I learned the very basics of fighting on the playground in elementary school.

I’m not talking about specific fighting techniques, those would come much later: I’m talking about lessons learned about fighting that would shape my – and many others’ – understanding of fighting whether it be in a schoolyard, an alleyway, a boxing ring, or a battlefield.

The first, perhaps most important, two lessons I learned are that once committed to the fight, you have to see the fight through to its ultimate decision, and you have to win. ...

Analysis by a captain in the IDF reserves, just back from the war, that will leave you with A LOT to think about — guaranteed

http://www.JewishWorldReview.com | Contrary to what is now the accepted wisdom in the media, Hezballah in its recent offensive against Israel neither "badly bloodied the Israel Defense Force," nor "fought it to a standstill" in Southern Lebanon. In fact, the opposite is the case. By any legitimate measure Hezballah was handed a resounding military defeat by the IDF in the recent fighting, and while the cancer that is Hezballah was not cured by Israel's soldiers, it was put into remission.

The UN’s humanitarian chief, one Jan Egeland, is apparently both a general and a pope. He not only, as an expert on humanitarian affairs, knows good war strategy from bad, but also moral war strategies from immoral ones: ...

So, Jimmay is willing to meet with a former Iranian President. And the Iranians reached out to him? Might that be because the last time they dealt with Carter they took an embassy, several hostages and eventually Iran itself - along with any Carter hope for a second term?

In case it slips any minds, eight American servicemen died in a failed operation some attribute in part to Carter's mishandling of, not only the military, including Special Forces, but also the CIA. His continued feckless meddling with Iran is the ultimate betrayal of their memory.

The noted expert on US-Iranian relations, Jimmy Carter, has agreed to host talks with former Iranian president Mohammad Khatami to help iron out the differences between the two countries. ...

$2.50 a gallon gasoline might be right around the corner:

Gasoline prices are falling fast and could keep dropping for months. “The only place they have to go is down,” says Fred Rozell, gasoline analyst at the Oil Price Information Service (OPIS). “We’ll be closer to $2 than $3 come Thanksgiving.”

And just in time for the fall elections, too!

I blame Bush. Or Rove. And Halliburton is mixed up in it somehow. Whomever–it’s a Republican conspiracy.

Either that, ...

In addition to supporting Democrat Joe Lieberman over Republican Alan Schlesinger in Connecticut, President Bush is supporting the Democrat over the Republican in Rhode Island, too. In the Republican primary, Bush supports Lincoln Chafee -- who votes with Bush on the important issues less often than Sen. Lieberman does -- over the only actual Republican in the race, Stephen Laffey.

Apart from Bush, the only person who hasn't figured out that Lincoln Chafee is a Democrat is Lincoln Chafee. As the expression goes, if Chafee switched parties, the average IQ on both sides of the aisle would go up.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has shrugged off repeated calls by UN head Kofi Annan to lift the military blockade of Lebanon, telling reporters that he sees the cease-fire agreement as a "fixed buffet" and, presumably, not a smorgasbord:

In a further sign that the UN Security Council has little resolve with which to confront Iran over its nuclear program, the British UN ambassador says the body will need another month to get a report from the IAEA in order to translate "NO!" from Iran's Farsi language:
